Dear Reader,People often ask, "How did I Spy start?" For 20 years I was editor of Scholastic's kindergarten magazine, Let's Find Out. One day in my mailbox I saw a promotional picture similar to the future photograph on pages 12-13 of I Spy: A Book of Picture Riddles. Neither the art director, Carol Devine Carson, nor I had ever heard of Walter Wick, the photographer, but we knew he would be perfect for young children because his photo was so clear and beautiful.
Though Walter Wick had not created work for young children before, he took to it immediately and created many terrific photos for us. One day Bernette Ford, publisher of Cartwheel Books at Scholastic, said, " You should do a book with him." And that is how I Spy started. The first book was published in 1992.
Happy Hunting!
