Unfortunately, kids often are introduced to gardening by way of chores. I remember absolutely hating to weed onions. I don't much like to weed them now either, but it isn't so bad when I've planned the garden myself.

There is something about planning a garden, doing all the work that's involved, and watching plants grow that's satisfying. Half the pleasure is knowing what's going to come up. The other half is worrying about bugs, rain, and sun, and then seeing that the garden bloomed after all. It's not a sure thing, gardening, but it's sure enough.

As you read this section, maybe you'll think of ways to get involved with gardening, whether it be to talk your parents into your own garden plot or to grow cherry tomatoes in a spot on your terrace or to keep houseplants growing inside. Maybe you'll find out you have a green thumb.
